Artificial Intelligence has gained rapid recognition and popularity in the past few years, impacting and changing the technology industry. Students are integrating AI technologies into school systems at an extreme pace. Using this tool in an unhealthy and unethical way can greatly affect the student’s academic performance and can make them over rely on this system. Students can slowly lose their built skills and will struggle with real time problems if AI is constantly used in educational settings. Dealing with the fast pace of growing AI, it is getting more difficult to differentiate what work is computer generated or written by a human.
As AI is spreading to classrooms, more students are encouraged to use it by their peers to quickly finish work their teacher assigns. Whether it be math homework or an essay, students are more likely to put in less effort because of the option of someone else writing their work for them. This discourages students from using their creativity and problem-solving skills to write their own personal statements. In the article “Rising Use of AI in Schools Comes With Big Downsides for Students” written by digital news reporter Jennifer Vilcarino and staff writer Lauraine Langreo, they explore and provide statistics of how teachers and professors feel about the integration of AI into their own classrooms, “71% of teachers said student use of AI has created an additional burden on them to understand whether a student’s work is their own…” (Vilcarino & Langreo, 2025). This research is to provide the teachers as well as the students with an opinion on how AI is affecting the education system in the present day. Over reliance on AI creates bad habits in students, such as a lazy environment and procrastination. Creative thinking requires independent thought for idea generation, exploring diverse perspectives, and independently solving problems.
Another idea stemming from Artificial Intelligence for fast-paced growth is how it will never be able to concretely replicate human emotions within their writing. Digital marketing manager April Giarla explains how Ai is creating a lack of human engagement in the education system through her article “The Negative Effects of Artificial Intelligence in Education”. She believes that “If teachers or students are asking AI to do all the work for them, it takes away the human element of learning and the connection higher education professionals have with their students” (Giarla, n.d). The reduction in face-to-face interactions between professors and students can hinder both parties. Professors won’t be able to gauge if their students are struggling with a subject. Students won’t be able to grasp certain concepts or comprehend what they are learning. With these two negative aspects, the education system will heavily take a toll.
Continuing to use AI in the educational setting, it’s often seen to make inaccurate statements or give wrong answers. In the peer-reviewed journal “A systems approach to AI and education in a post-digital world” written by Mark Sharples , he reviews how as AI is being integrated into more systems, inaccuracies can continue to be made more apparent, which can lead to confusion and the mass spread of false information. His thoughts on this are explained, “AI can generate inaccurate or biased information, and students may lack the critical thinking skills to evaluate AI-generated content effectively” (Sharples, 2025). Giving students the wrong information can impact their learning and the growth of their personal skills and thought processes. This point relates back to April Giarla’s article where she explains how AI is not a fully reliable source because studies show the answers they provide are incorrect most of the time. She also continues to examine the biases and inaccuracies within AI, “A recent study published by Defense One found AI tools are incorrect 1/4 of the time, which is a pretty high number to think it’s OK to rely on for educational purposes.” (Giarla, n.d). Both articles are worried about the educational system because the spread of false information on these platforms can impact the way students learn. Instead of learning from their own instructors, they rely on AI for all of their solutions. Believing the solutions AI gives you, reduces the purpose of human learning and poses not only a threat to the careers of professors and instructors, but the students themselves.
Students can slowly lose their built skills and will struggle with real time problems if AI is constantly used in educational settings. Artificial intelligence should only be used at a minimum because of the dangers it poses to the younger generation. The implementation of AI, especially early education, can severely impact the student’s creativity and problem-solving skills for real life scenarios.
